Decorate Slanted Ceiling Bedroom

I live in a 1905 house and the ceilings in the second floor and crazy slanted. I love the character they add, but they do make decorating a little tricky!

Today, I thought I would share how I've been decorating with slanted ceilings. As I've finished up rooms, I keep getting asked for tips on dealing with them. So for my fellow slanted roof friends, this one is for you!

master bedroom

The trickiest part of decorating my master bedroom is dealing with putting a bed under the eaves. I love the layout with the bed on the longest wall, but I had to find a short bed. This one BARELY fits. We don't hit our head on the slant, but we did have to sell a canopy bed that we had because it just wouldn't fit in here.

Another thing I had to figure out with this room was where to end the wallpaper. I choose to think of the slant as an extension of the ceiling. We were worried that if we papered that part, it'd look too crazy in here. I'm happy with that choice because the white gives this room a much needed minute to breath. But I could see others making another choice

I have a vanity in my bedroom where I put on my makeup. That got tucked under the eaves, but it did make putting up a mirror a little tricky. Instead of putting a tiny mirror on the wall, I used a table top mirror so I can move it close if needed.

One thing I'd really suggest when working with slanted ceilings is to play up the drama they add to the room! We used to have the closet where the vanity is. To give this room the symmetrical rainbow bookcase, we relocated it and built in a bookcase specifically for this wall. Those shelves are my favorite thing about this room because they play to the drama the roof lends.

son's room

In my son's room, I put his bed on the tall wall (mostly because it's usually tucked into the corner so there's less of a chance of him falling out.

For most ceilings, I go white. But since the ceiling takes up so much of the wall space, I wanted to celebrate that by painting the eaves with clouds. This creates a little bit of drama and makes up for the fact that you can't hang art of the slants. I'd definitely suggest trying this two-tone look!

Another thing I did in this room was hang art on the wall that plays nicely with the lines of the ceiling. I created a little triangle of art above the bed and the kites by the rocker pull your eye up as the wall does. This helps draw the eye up to the highest point of the room in a pleasing way which emphasizes the unique architecture detail.

Lastly, the play table and book shelves are tucked under the slanted ceiling on this side of the room. The beauty of the slant is that it adds immediate coziness- so use it to your advantage to create intimate spots in your space. Taking advantage of the straight wall under the slope makes for smart storage space.

playroom

In the playroom, which is also like a mini living room, the biggest wall is wallpapered. This makes it a feature that again, accentuates the slant.

The sofa is tucked underneath the eaves. I painted this room two tone too in an effort to make it more playful. It also grounds the room and tells the eye where to look first.

kitchen

These pictures are from an Air Bnb (the A Frame Haus) that I stayed out a few months ago. Side note, it was one of my favorite trips in case you need a beautiful cabin in Utah to stay at!

For the kitchen, there are no upper cabinets, just lots of storage in the lower cabinets. To keep it interesting, carefully chosen accessories decorate the countertop.

This cabin uses shiplap that extends from the ceiling to the bottom of the walls to show off the historic and unique details of the home. This unifies the space while still adding interest.

bathroom

This bathroom is also in the A Frame Haus and I love it! One of the benefits of sloped ceiling is the ability to add additional windows and skylights for extra natural light. This helps to beat the claustrophobic feel that can sometimes be a downside of slanted ceilings. These skylights helps the room appear bright and airy at all times.

And let me tell you, these were so beautiful at night as the sky filled with stars!

I also think the combination of the more rustic ship lap with the smooth subway tile is just beautiful in here. The white unifies everything and the texture makes it interesting.

living room

The A Frame Haus also has their sofa tucked under the slope. Again, the shiplap unifies the ceiling and the walls while skylights break up the ceiling. Texture from the woven rug, chunky throw, and leather sofa add interest to this living room.

You can also see that the wood burning stove is next to the sofa with the chimney going up through the slant in the ceiling.

Alright! There are how I dealt with the slanted ceilings in our house. And how I saw it mastered in an Air Bnb. Personally, I really tried to make the eaves an asset and play off.
